Weekly spelling words

Need a list for this week? SpellTestKit includes sample lists from simple three-letter words for first grade to tricky words such as necessary, rhythm and embarrass for older students, plus a list of the words adults misspell most.

Saved you some time? Leave a tip, entirely optional.

Choose a list from the Word list menu, edit it to match your curriculum and run the test, or print it. Your edited list is saved for next time.

How to give a spelling test

Type the words in the box, one per line, or choose a ready-made list. To give context, add a sentence after a vertical bar, such as “their | They forgot their lunch.” Context sentences matter for homophones such as their, there and they’re, where the word alone is ambiguous. Tick Shuffle order to mix the words each time, and Read the sentence too to hear the word, the sentence and the word again, as a teacher would say it.

Press Start test. Each word is read aloud automatically; press Say the word to hear it again or Say it slowly to hear the word on its own at a slower speed. Type the answer and press Enter or Next. At the end the score appears with a table of every word, the answer given, and a tick, a cross or “almost” for answers one letter away.

Practice that sticks

Practice mode shows the correct spelling right after each answer. Use it for the first few runs of a new list, then switch it off for a real test. Practise the missed words starts a new round containing only the words that were wrong, so each round gets shorter. Repeating the missed words the next day, rather than straight away, helps them stay in long-term memory.

Voices and printing

Speech comes from your device, so the voices depend on your browser and operating system. Pick a voice and speed in the toolbar; slower speeds help younger children and English learners. For paper tests, print a numbered sheet with name and score lines and a separate answer key.

Private by design

SpellTestKit has no accounts and no server. Words are spoken by your browser, answers are checked on this device and nothing is recorded or uploaded.
